The PLA Naval Type 033 Class submarine was the first Chinese built submarine based on
the Soviet Romeo class submarine - a tracable development from the German Type XXI U-boat.
A total of 84 Type 033 submarines were built in China from 1962 to 1984.
Today, most of these submarines have been retired or preserved in museum
with a few remaining for training purposes.
